Seventh Annual Soap Box Derby Stem Summer Camp At Derby Downs

03.19.2019

The International Soap Box Derby (ISBD) will be hosting its seventh annual Soap Box Derby STEM Summer Camp at Derby Downs, with two week-long sessions of June 3 through 7 and June 10 through 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Boys and girls ages 8 through 13 will be able to join in on the fun.

The International Soap Box Derby is a strong proponent of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education. The organization’s mission is to education and inspire youth, while also providing an entertaining experience at all of its events. Throughout the course of the summer camp, children will experience the thrills of the Soap Box Derby while also building meaningful friendships with other participants.

Youth will design, build, and race Soap Box Derby cars down the Derby Downs track every day. Participants also will construct, test, and compete with scale model cars in a Mini Soap Box Derby race, as well as experimenting with other materials and equipment.

On the last day of each session, family and friends are invited to attend and cheer for their racers during the competition and awards presentations as well as tour the Soap Box Derby’s Hall of Fame Museum.

“We are excited to expand the age range to 8 through 13 as these youngsters learn STEM through hands-on projects. These camp sessions fit our mission well for the youngsters to grow in knowledge, character and collaboration,” said Mark Gerberich, president and chief executive officer of ISBD.

“This camp provides youth with fun and memorable Soap Box Derby experiences that are STEM driven,” says Linda Hubbell, ISBD’s education director. “Campers agree that their favorite activity is racing a Soap Box Derby car each day on the Derby Downs track.”

The cost per child is $205 per session, if registered before April 1. For more information, please visit summercamp.soapboxderby.org or call 330.733.8723 x20. Enrollment is limited to 52 spots per week, and all students attending will receive free tickets to the FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby world championship on Saturday, July 20.
