NewsSOAP BOX DERBY CANCELS COMMUNITY EVENTS FOR 202008.27.2020The International Soap Box Derby is canceling all community and private events at Derby Downs for the remainder of the 2020 season. Much like the cancelation of the championship race, the decision to cancel these events is based on an abundance of caution for the health of patrons, their families, volunteers, and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic. The cancelation is because of the concern for the health of everyone who would be participating in the events as they would be traveling to Akron, and the ability to ensure safe social distancing as well as the maximum size of gatherings on-site during the various activities at Derby Downs. The events that have been canceled are as follows: Inclusion Day Senior Day Veterans Appreciation Day Corporate Derby Challenge Community Day Gravity Racing Challenge STEM Team Competition Mark Gerberich, ISBD president and chief executive officer, said, “We are disappointed that we have canceled the rest of the racing season, but it seems to be the prudent decision. The Corporate Derby Challenge is our largest fundraiser and we had moved it to September to try and accommodate. But the health and safety of our staff, volunteers, financial supporters and community remain our top priority.”
