FirstEnergyAll-American Soap Box Derby Countdown

The International Soap Box Derby (ISBD) is proud to announce that it will be hosting the 8th annual STEM Summer Program at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio. Beginning June 7 through June 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. boys and girls aged 8-13 are invited to experience the excitement of building and racing Soap Box Derby cars, making new friends, and participating in fun interactive learning activities. Health and safety precautions will be in place to protect participants from the spread of COVID-19.

“As an advocate of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) based learning, our mission is to educate and inspire youth,” Mark Gerberich, ISBD president and chief executive officer said. “The Soap Box Derby STEM Summer Program gives kids a hands-on learning experience outside the typical classroom. They share skills they’ve already mastered while also gaining new knowledge and understanding that helps them avoid the ‘summer slide’ that often happens when school is out of session,” Gerberich continues.

After a week of designing, building, and racing full and 1/13 scale model Derby cars, family and friends are invited to a culminating event of competition, awards, and a tour of the Soap Box Derby Hall of Fame Museum. Linda Hubbel, ISBD education director said, “Watching the kids work together as they gain knowledge and character is amazing, however, most of the kids agree that racing a Soap Box Derby car every day on the Derby Downs track is their favorite activity of the week.”

Registration for the Soap Box Derby STEM Summer Program is $225 and includes a ticket to the FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby world championship on Friday, July 23, 2021. Enrollment is limited to 48 children. For more information, please visit or call 330.733.8723 x20.
