FirstEnergyAll-American Soap Box Derby Countdown

There has not been a Soap Box Derby event in Fayetteville for over 50 years. This event will be a chance for families in the community to bond, both for race participants and spectators/supporters. The Soap Box Derby provides a unique opportunity to change lives of children in our community, through a hands-on Science, Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) education-based program and a fund raising opportunity our club can use to enhance the benefit to the children of the community that we currently provide.

Fayetteville is adjacent to Fort Bragg, one of the U.S. Army's largest installations in the world with approximately 43,734 military personnel and a like number of spouses and dependents living on Fort Bragg and in the Fayetteville area. We will provide cars free of charge through our current fund-raising efforts to Gold Star families, children of disabled or deployed service members and children in the community living in poverty. The Soap Box Derby will provide an opportunity for the initial group of children and their families to participate free of charge while working towards a achieving a goal, with the added benefit of stimulating interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math

A message from the All-American Soap Box Derby

The Soap Box Derby is a youth racing program which has run nationally since 1934. World Championship finals are held each July at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio.

The idea of the Soap Box Derby grew out of a photographic assignment of Dayton, Ohio, newsman Myron Scott. He covered a race of boy-built cars in his home community and was so impressed with this event that he acquired a copyright for the idea and began development of a similar program on a national scale.
