FirstEnergyAll-American Soap Box Derby Countdown

Morganton Soap Box Derby

Morganton is located in the foothills of North Carolina.  We have a dedicated track at the Burke County Fairgrounds on Bost Road.  We hold our race on the first Saturday in May. The Morganton race is sponsed by the Morganton Optimist Club.  One of the most important things the club does is working with children.  Our main goal is having family fun and building something for the future and what better way to start than with a soap box derby car.

Marylin Waters is the local director and can be reached at 828-443-0407.  Tommy Waters is the assistant director and assistant regional director for region 12 and he can be reached at 828-443-4786.  Also the other contact is Johnny Puett, he can be reached at 828-437-8608.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact us.  We would love for you to race the hill in Morganton.

A message from the All-American Soap Box Derby

The Soap Box Derby is a youth racing program which has run nationally since 1934. World Championship finals are held each July at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio.

The idea of the Soap Box Derby grew out of a photographic assignment of Dayton, Ohio, newsman Myron Scott. He covered a race of boy-built cars in his home community and was so impressed with this event that he acquired a copyright for the idea and began development of a similar program on a national scale.
