FirstEnergyAll-American Soap Box Derby Countdown

Welcome to the Omaha Area Soap Box Derby

The Omaha Area Soap Box Derby Association is dedicated to helping children become solid community citizens through the teaching of basic construction skills, teamwork, the spirit of competition, perseverance, and family values. Our local organization is always recruiting new racers to fill our open race cars. The organization's volunteers are always willing to help new racers learn the sport.  Our goal is to get new kids in the sport, teach them how to race, and cheer them on as they learn how to compete and make friends.

Omaha was one of the original 34 cities at the first All-American Soap Box Derby in 1934.  Omaha held a local race until 1966.  The race was restarted by the Bellevue Optimist Club in 1979 and raced on Galvin Road (in Bellevue, NE) for 8 years before moving to it's current location at Seymour Smith Park, Omaha, NE.

Soap box derby is a racing program for girls and boys ages 7 to 21 years old.

A message from the All-American Soap Box Derby

The Soap Box Derby is a youth racing program which has run nationally since 1934. World Championship finals are held each July at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio.

The idea of the Soap Box Derby grew out of a photographic assignment of Dayton, Ohio, newsman Myron Scott. He covered a race of boy-built cars in his home community and was so impressed with this event that he acquired a copyright for the idea and began development of a similar program on a national scale.
