Welcome to the New Jersey Soap Box Derby website. The mission of the New Jersey Soap Box Derby Racing Association is to help promote and publicize all forms of Soap Box racing throughout the state of New Jersey. New Jersey features many races throughout the state.

Race location: S. Timberlane Drive, Hopewell Township, NJ

The Hopewell Township race is the only official sanctioned race by All American Soap Box Derby in New Jersey with winners advancing to Akron, Ohio for the International Soap Box Derby Championship. Please call email us for info about the Local Derby at njsoapboxderby@gmail.com

The Hopewell Township Local Race features 3 divisions of racing to include: Stock, Super Stock, and Masters. The Hopewell Township race is annually held in June. This event is a double elimination event which guarantees all entries will race a minimum of four runs on the hill.

Special thanks to Hopewell Township Recreation & Public Works Departments for bringing racing to another NJ town.

The International Soap Box Derby championship is held annually in Akron, Ohio in mid July. To order your car kit or for more info about the World Championship race please go to www.soapboxderby.org

GETTING STARTED:

Kids, don't wait till your 16 to drive. Start driving Soap Box Derby cars now. A student who is 7 - 20 years of age on race day can race in the Soap Box Derby.

To race in the official races you will need either a Stock, Super Stock, or Masters Car Kit. The Stock and Super Stock car kits cost approximately $550 each. The Masters Car kit costs approximately $700-$1,000 depending on your paint job and detail. These cars can be purchased online at www.aasbd.org. Most families seek sponsors through local businesses or corporations to help pay for the cost of the soap box car kit and then provide advertising or logos on their cars. If you need a new soap box car kit you should order and build your car a month or two in advance of the race. Kits can be ordered online at www.aasbd.org.

The stock division is for racers ages 7-13. The Super Stock division is for racers ages 9-20 years of age. The Masters Division is for racers ages 10-20. Super Kids Division is for any child age 7+. The New Brunswick race is open to anyone that lives in New Jersey.

A message from the All-American Soap Box Derby

The Soap Box Derby is a youth racing program which has run nationally since 1934. World Championship finals are held each July at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio.

The idea of the Soap Box Derby grew out of a photographic assignment of Dayton, Ohio, newsman Myron Scott. He covered a race of boy-built cars in his home community and was so impressed with this event that he acquired a copyright for the idea and began development of a similar program on a national scale.
