FirstEnergyAll-American Soap Box Derby Countdown

7 Steps to Race Day

 1)   ELIGIBILITY:

All kids ages 7 to 18. For Stock Division you must be 7 years old by May 1, 2020 and must not turn 14 years of age on or before July 31, 2020. For Super Stock Division you must be 9 years old by July 31, 2020 and must not turn 19 years of age on or before July 31, 2020. Proof of age is required. An adult must be with each kid at all times during race weekend.

 2)   REGISTRATION:

Register using the registration forms on this website. Fill them out in the browser and email to setxsbd.racedirector@gmail.com. Mail a copy of your birth certificate and current photo to PO Box 5509, Beaumont TX  77726-5509 or scan it and email to the same email address.  Or you may bring your completed registration forms and copy of your birth certificate and photo to the car clinic.

3)   GET A SPONSOR:

Most kids and parents line up one or more sponsors to help them pay the $250 entrance fee. Sponsors are allowed to advertise on the car following the AASBD guidelines. We have the official AASBD stock and super stock kits for sale for approximately $800 which includes the complete car kit plus wheels and shipping costs. Or you may purchase a car kit and wheels directly from the All-American Soap Box Derby.  If you are interested in participating in the Southeast Texas Soap Box Derby but do not have a sponsor, contact us with your name and phone number - we may be able to help you participate.

4)   BUILD YOUR CAR:

You must build your own car with help from an adult – parent, friend, or mentor. It’s a joint effort between you and your parent, but you must do most of the work yourself. The kits can be assembled in a weekend. Follow the instructions exactly. Total weight of the car, wheels and driver for Stock is 200 lbs., and for Super Stock is 240 lbs.

5)   PRE-INSPECTION AND CAR CLINICS:

Pre-inspection and car clinics will take place on three Saturday mornings: March 28, April 4 and April 18 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at our Derby lot located at the corner of 18th Street and Liberty in Beaumont.  Bring your completed car to one of the clinics for inspection and weigh-in. Technicians will be available to answer any questions you have about assembly or with any unresolved issues. Complete your registration at one of the car clinics including ordering your t-shirts for yourself and your mentor. NOTE: You MUST attend one of the car clinics with your assembled car or you will not be allowed to participate in the Derby on race weekend.

6)   FINAL INSPECTION AND IMPOUND – MAY 1:

Bring your completed car to our check-in location: "To Be Determined - Location Changing" between 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm on May 1, 2020 for check-in. Your car will be inspected for the last time before the official race. As time permits, you will be allowed to take a practice run down the track Friday evening. After final checks of your car, it will be impounded overnight.  All fees must be paid prior to May 1 in order to be able to race your car.

7)   RACE DAY – MAY 2-3:

The race will be held at the Maury Meyers Bridge. Parents/Mentors and drivers need to report to the bottom of the hill at 7:30 am to make sure their car is loaded, and be at the top of the hill by 7:45 am for final instructions. If you return on Sunday for the finals, you will need to report by 7:30 am. This is a double elimination race (except for the Super Kids Division). Each heat consists of two racers down the track. The cars and drivers are brought back to the top of the hill to continue the race. You must lose two heats to be eliminated. All participants are encouraged to attend the awards ceremony at a time and place to be deteremined where all racers will be recognized and receive a trophy. The 1st place cars and drivers in the three divisions (Stock, Super Stock, and Super Kids) will be sent to Akron, Ohio to participate in derby week and the International Soap Box Derby in July, 2020. We will ship the cars and pay each driver a stipend to cover most expenses.  In addition, the top three finalists in each of the 3 divisions will be awarded scholarships:  1st place $1,500, 2nd place $1,000, and 3rd place  $500 for a total of up to $9,000 in scholarships.
