FirstEnergyAll-American Soap Box Derby Countdown

Welcome to the New Brunswick Soap Box Derby Website. The mission of the New Jersey Soap Box Derby Racing Association is to help promote and publicize all forms of Soap Box racing throughout the state of New Jersey.   New Jersey features many races throughout the state. We are hosting our Battle at the Beach Rally Race in Tinton Falls, NJ on October 27th & 28th.

For more info about the Rally Race please call Denise Gutierrez at (609) 433-0340.  The New Brunswick local race is open to New Jersey participants and will be held on a Saturday, in June 9, 2019.  The New Brunswick Race is the only official sanctioned race by All American Soap Box Derby in New Jersey with winners advancing to Akron, Ohio for the International Soap Box Derby Championship.  Please call Mike for info about the Local Derby at (732) 296-8816.

The New Brunswick Local Derby features 5 divisions of racing to include: Stock, Super Stock, Masters, Super Kids, and Adults.  The New Brunswick race is annually held in June. This event is a double elimination event which guarantees all entries will race a minimum of four runs on the hill.

The New Brunswick race also features Super Kids racing for special needs students from around the state.  Any special needs student in the state of NJ under 100 pounds is encouraged to experience Super Kids racing free of charge. Johnson & Johnson, NC & Sons, Amerihealth NJ, and Turtle & Hughes have built four cars for this opportunity.  Each Super kids car fits two drivers.  Many of our past champions have volunteered to assist special needs students on Sunday for this experience.  Any special need student can share the experience free of charge.  Please call our office if you would like to participate. Email Mike Blackwell at or (732) 296-8816.

Special thanks to Johnson & Johnson for serving as the host and major sponsor for the past 15 years in New Brunswick.  The race is held on the Johnson & Johnson's World Headquarters campus at 501 George Street in New Brunswick.  Special thanks to our major sponsors that include: Johnson & Johnson, Turtle & Hughes and the City of New Brunswick.

The International Soap Box Derby championship is held annually in Akron, Ohio in mid July.  To order your car kit or for more info about the World Championship race please go to

Kids, don't wait till your 16 to drive.  Start driving Soap Box cars now.  All American Soap Box Derby lowered the age this year to allow kids as young as 7 to begin racing.  A student who is 7 - 20 years of age on race day can race in the Soap Box Derby.
To race in the official races you will need either a Stock, Super Stock, or Masters Car Kit.  The Stock and Super Stock car kits cost approximately $550 each.  The Masters Car kit costs approximately $700-$1,000 depending on your paint job and detail.  These cars can be purchased online at  Most families seek sponsors through local businesses or corporations to help pay for the cost of the soap box car kit and then provide advertising or logos on their cars.  If you need a new soap box car kit you should order and build your car a month or two in advance of the race.  Kits can be ordered online at
The stock division is for racers ages 7-13.  The Super Stock division is for racers ages 9-20 years of age.  The Masters Division is for racers ages 10-20.   Super Kids Division is for any child age 7+. The New Brunswick race is open to anyone that lives in New Jersey.

A message from the All-American Soap Box Derby

The Soap Box Derby is a youth racing program which has run nationally since 1934. World Championship finals are held each July at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio.

The idea of the Soap Box Derby grew out of a photographic assignment of Dayton, Ohio, newsman Myron Scott. He covered a race of boy-built cars in his home community and was so impressed with this event that he acquired a copyright for the idea and began development of a similar program on a national scale.
