champs and their car handlers a dedicated area to work
on their cars prior to the FirstEnergy All-American Soap
Box Derby World Championship race.

Each July more than 400 of the best gravity racers from around the world travel to Akron, Ohio in hopes of being crowned World Champion at the FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby.

A tremendous amount of work and preparation takes place for a child just to make it to the world famous Derby Downs Track for the big race. After a child qualifies for the event by winning the local race or finishing high on the regional point list his/her car is shipped to Akron where it undergoes a rigorous inspection by the Derby’s inspection team. Once the champs arrive the hard works begins to set their cars up for the races that take place prior to the All-American and eventually the World Championship race on Saturday.

All of that work now takes place under a 60’ x 80’ tent in the Myers Industries Pit Area. In 2012 Myers Industries became a partner of the Derby and the Pit Area was created.

“Prior to 2012 there was no Myers Industries Pit Area,” said Derby President & CEO Joe Mazur. “It was tough for the champs and their car handlers. There wasn’t a tent so they had to work on the cars in the hot sun with no cover. We’re thrilled that Myers Industries continues to be a partner and provides a fantastic area for the champs to work on their cars.”

In addition to the topside tent Myers also provides each champ with their very own backpack where all of the “swag” they receive for race-week is kept.

The Derby would like to say THANK YOU to Myers Industries for helping us continue our mission of building knowledge and character, and creating meaningful experiences through collaboration and fair and honest competition.

This is the sixth installment of our weekly “Thank You Thursday” feature. Each week we will offer a heartfelt “Thank You” to a corporation, civic or community leader, volunteer, foundation or an individual who has helped us continue our mission. To view previous features please click below.
