NewsGravity Racing Challenge STEM Team Competition - Largest Competition Ever05.16.2015 The Soap Box Derby® hosted its biggest Gravity Racing Challenge® event ever. On May 15-16, 2015, more than 130 teams competed in the traditional Stock and Super Stock divisions, as well as a new open build high school division. The race was presented by Time Warner Cable through its Connect A Million Minds Program™. Teams from New York, Georgia and all over Ohio competed at the world famous Derby Downs Track. Teams of up to 10 students and educators built and fine-tuned their Soap Box Derby cars over the past several months. In addition, they worked on optional contests that included photography, writing a press release, mini Soap Box Derby car race and design, and creating an infomercial. Five area high school teams competed in a new Open Class Division. Teams were given kits that included the floorboard, axles, wheels and steering and braking systems. They were also given a list of materials that could be used in the design and construction of the body. Some built their car to be the fastest and some wanted their car to look the best, in a non-traditional-Derby sort of way.
