20200624 151108Legacy Motors of Akron is the new multi-year sponsor of the Mini Soap Box Derby Car 34 activity book for students in Summit County schools.

The Mini-Car Program uses scale model-size Soap Box Derby cars to teach various elements of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) to elementary and middle school students. The Mini Car 34 activity book, designed specifically for students in grades third and fourth, is a five-hour At-Home Program that helps students learn such principles as gravity and friction through trial and error plus testing and analyzing results for racing.

Legacy Motors of Akron’s sponsorship will provide 400 complimentary scale model cars and “how to” activity book for students. Packets are available for pickup at Legacy Motors (1277 Home Ave., Akron) or you can sign up to receive one on the Soap Box Derby’s website - freeminicar.soapboxderby.org.

The Soap Box Derby’s STEM Education Program currently is in more than 800 schools nationwide with 30,000 students participating. The new At-Home STEM Education Program is getting Mini Cars in the hands of students working from home. These programs follow the Soap Box Derby’s mission to teach knowledge, character and collaboration.

“Legacy Motors of Akron is proud to be part of the Soap Box Derby’s STEM Education Program and impact students in the third and fourth grades, said Doug Behrens, owner of Legacy Motors of Akron.   “In addition, we are providing 400 cars and activity books to Summit County students with an opportunity to learn and build a Mini Soap Box Derby Car. We love Akron!”

“This is very exciting for the Soap Box Derby’s momentum as Legacy Motors of Akron becomes involved with our STEM Education Program,” said Mark Gerberich, president and CEO of the International Soap Box Derby.   “Adding Legacy Motors of Akron to the group of partners – the University of Akron, FirstEnergy, AAA and the Akron Summit County Convention and Visitors Bureau – continues the momentum that we have gained with our STEM Education Program.”

Last fiscal year, the Soap Box Derby received grants for our STEM Education Programs that put nearly $120,000 back into the City of Akron, County of Summit and Northeast Ohio schools and organizations.
