A Sad Departure It is with great sorrow that we inform you of the passing of long time Sertoma Mile High Soap Box Derby supporter and Super Kids Program Coordinator, Ann Cahill. Ann fought a courageous fight against cancer for the last two plus years. She will be greatly missed not only for her unconditional contributions but remembered for all of the smiles she brought to the organization and events from her warm and hospitable personality. Anne got involved with the Sertoma Mile High Soap Box Derby from its inception through her family’s involvement of the sport. She was dedicated to moving the program forward in Denver and offered all of the spare time she could, long after her family was done racing. Her friendship and presence will be missed. About Us 2020 marked the 14th year of the Sertoma Mile High Soap Box Derby (SMHSBD) in Denver! The Coronavirus presented this year and 2021 with new considerations. The SMHSBD rally races and the local championship will be cancelled for this year. Regarding the world championship, the following is a word from Aakron: “With the ever-changing developments with COVID-19, it is difficult to make final decisions concerning our FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship. Working with input from regional directors, the rally commission and the racing commission, we are discussing many plans for possible qualifying, and formats for the All-American. These include determining the number of racers, safely social distancing, and how to position races throughout the week. The safety of our racers, race families, volunteers and constituents continue to be our number one concern. We will make a final decision on running the race in July or postponing the event by June.” HOWEVER, there are still hopes for a Race To Read program based on those picked up from the Night of Fire and Thunder Bandimere Speedway event. RACE TO READ Program with Bandimere Speedway This exciting new endeavor for the Sertoma Mile High Soap Box Derby was started last year with a nice bit of success. New strategies were tried toward furthering our growth rather than holding spring rallies. This year we hoped to continue this program. We got involved with Bandimere’s Race to Read six-week reading program, spreading word and invitations to our racing program to potential new families. The Race to Read program encourages literacy by providing an exciting race-themed incentive for elementary-age students of 70 local schools. Flyers describing the program and inviting families to come try out soap box derby were handed out at the Bandimere Speedway event which brought us new racers. We hope to spark more interests and resulting racers this year. We hope to provide opportunities for families to learn more about soap box derby while providing safe outdoor activities such as barbeques, experiences at gravity racing, and games and clinics revolved around soap box derby racing.
