"Jack of all trades, master of none" is a figure of speech used in reference to a person that is competent with many skills, but no particular one.

In Dave Hubbell’s case you could say, “Jack of all trades, master of all.”

Hubbell is an engineer and the husband of the Derby’s Education Director Linda Hubbell. They have two teenage children (Laura and Nick) who have raced in Soap Box Derby for many years. Nick was the winner of the DQ Rally Challenge in the Super Stock Division in 2014. Laura raced in the Ultimate Speed Division this past year and was the 2016 recipient of the President’s Youth Volunteer Service Award.

“When I joined the Derby team we had an immediate need in our production department,” said Derby President & CEO Joe Mazur. “We had a problem with the production of our floorboards. Dave stepped up and helped us re-program the CNC machine at our Topside production facility that cuts all of our floorboards.”

When the Derby’s STEM-Based Education Program entered new territory in 2011 with the creation of the Mini Soap Box Derby car program Hubbell was a driving force behind the new design and manufacturing process.

In addition to the helping re-program the CNC machine for the Derby floorboards Hubbell also created new programs to cut the Derby’s mini car floorboards, the Masters Car headpiece and the brake pedal used in Derby cars.

After the 2015 FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby race the Derby was looking to re-design the Soap Box Derby wheel to make it more consistent. “Dave was one of the first ones to step up and help with that process,” said Mazur.

In 2015 Hubbell created a program using stickers and large display boards throughout the Derby Downs grounds to help track the SUBWAY® Challenge and DQ Rally Challenge results. He has also been involved with the calibration of the track prior to the World Championship race and has volunteered at many events along with Linda, Laura and Nick.

The Derby would like to say THANK YOU to Dave Hubbell for helping us continue our mission of building knowledge and character, and creating meaningful experiences through collaboration and fair and honest competition.
